On Tuesday 2nd I went to my first Town Council meetings after my election.First was a short Planning meeting, considering a car port in Wood Street, an extension in Vale View, and an extension in Honeyhill. Cllr Gibbs said regarding North Wilts District Council’s decision to give permission for the development on the Beaufort Arms site that he was disappointed at the lack of support given to the Town Council’s view by the District Council and in particular by Cllr Toby Sturgis who is a County Council member for the area.
At the Revenue & Resources Meeting grants were approved to the Prospect Hospice for Community Nurses (£500) and to British Legion to fund a band at this year’s Remembrance Parade (£300).We discussed the Council’s web-site. Several of us felt it is rather boring! Staff shortages have kept it from being kept up to date but since I started asking about it updating is getting better. Staff were asked to find out about services that would develop the site and maintain it in return for advertising revenue. My view is that we just need to get the content up to date, readable and interesting – it isn’t that difficult. After looking at the Annual report on the CCTV system we decided to get some more information about likely technology improvements, and the effect of the change to a Unitary Authority.
Thinking about how the Council’s cash balances are invested it was decided not to change. As part of this item there was some discussion about the forthcoming budget setting process. Peter Doyle asked that staff included proposals for the Town Council Council Tax to stay the same or have a small decrease.

Could the Town Council comment on why the Distrct Council has disregarded their objections to the approval of the development of the Beuafort Arms site in New Road?
As a resident of New Road I can not believe that anyone in “Authority” has really considered the true implications of the the development of this site particularly in conjunction with the development of the old St Ivel site. There will be traffc gridlock at the junction of New Road and Station Road if all the proposed plans go ahead. The current un- official “by pass” that New Road, Staition Road and Noredown Way currently provide for the High Street in Wootton Bassett will be LOST. The knock on effect will be total gridlock in the High Street and beyond.
How are any of the Councils going to square these planning decisions with the Public and the Business in the Town when the ……. hits the fan?
Frankley guys and gals on the Town Council your report card this year has to state ” Has not grasped the real consequeces that the decisions by the County and District Councils in relation to this proposal are going o make to he town – must try harder next term”
Not only do you appear to have lost it, but sadly didn’t see it coming in the first place! Lets hope that you do have some serious strategy and plans in mind to sort out the consequences of these actions ??? Oh! and by the way, the Town now has no obvious suitable site for a Railway Station, pity that given that the future development plannning of the railway network for this area included a station for this town.
PLEASE KEEP UP with EVERTHING that may effect this Town in the future guys it’s nearly 2008! Are the decisions you have made this year really going to reflect the best deal for the Town in five years given how fast things change and move these days?
